South Congress Trailer Garden - Austin, TX

This little garden on the doorstep of a trailer in a co-housing community in South Austin began as a grassy area with compacted soil. We sheet mulched using the community’s donkey manure, fallen leaves, and cardboard. This created an immediate uptick in topsoil generation and fertilization for our new plants. We used foraged wood, bamboo, and stone from the nearby landscape to make a natural border that encased a variety of native and edible plants. We planted Passionflower and Star Jasmine to climb the bamboo trellis and planted a Pecan and Mulberry tree to eventually provide shade over the trailer. As the plants mature, this garden will be reducing air conditioner dependency while offering an abundance of food for humans and wildlife.
