Sunset Hill Compost Bays - Seattle, WA

We built these compost bays with salvaged lumber and pallets to provide an on-site soil regeneration mechanism for this backyard garden. The bays allow for easy access with a wheelbarrow or a kitchen compost bucket to dump food scraps and yard waste. With a system like this, by the time both bays are filled the first should be completely decomposed and ready to reapply in the garden as highly nutritious soil. Creating designs like this help keep locally adapted nutrients on site and eliminate the need for external inputs which can be costly and environmentally taxing.
