Windy Willow Hugelkultur, Rain Garden, Terraces and Trellis
Excavated a large trench and backfilled with layers of logs, branches, and soil to create these large hugelkultur mounds which will provide a growing space for plants of all kinds. Built this large, as the wood decomposes it will retain enough moisture from the wet seasons to irrigate and feed the soil for the plants growing here.
Terraces were built into the hillside with an excavator to improve accessibility, water retention, and soil retention for this new permaculture orchard.
Under the eaves of this house I excavated a sunken garden bed that slopes gently away from the foundation to allow snowmelt and rain to collect where I’ve spread sunflower, vegetable, and wildflower seeds, which will germinate even more in consequent years after the wet seasons.
Using locally harvest Douglas Fir logs from a thinning project, I scarred the bottom with a torch to reduce rotting and then tied Jute twine between the posts to provide a trellis support for grape vines and hops vines to eventually meet in the center. This will be the entrance to the Crater Garden which will be built in the fall.
